There's a crucial step in video creation that many, especially those new to the content creation journey, overlook. It's what separates a channel that grows and succeeds from one that stagnates and goes nowhere, regardless of the effort you put in or the number of videos you produce.

In today's newsletter, I'll share this essential element you can't afford to ignore if you want to stop wasting your efforts on video after video, especially if you're in the early stages of your journey and have decided to really commit to YouTube. Plus, I'll share an actionable step that you can use immediately to make a real difference.

So, what's this one overlooked essential element?

Knowing exactly who you're creating videos for. Without this, you can't tailor your content to engage and provide value to an audience.

Take, for example, a video tutorial on landscape photography. If the creator is unclear whether it's for beginners unfamiliar with camera settings and technical jargon or for photographers who know the basics and want to level up their skills, they'll struggle to hit the right note. Beginners might get lost in technicalities, while experienced photographers might get bored with basic explanations, resulting in neither of them continuing with the video or even coming back to watch more videos.

This is why pinpointing your target audience is essential for creating content that appeals to them.

Consider a creator putting together a travel vlog to a destination with diverse attractions – beaches, museums, nightlife, kids' activities, and more. If they tried to cover everything, they might lose the interest of specific groups. Families or a much older demographic might not care about nightlife, and single younger audiences would likely skip over kid-friendly spots.

Segmenting your content into different videos targeting specific interests can make each one more relevant, engaging, and impactful.

If your content is educational rather than informational, understanding where your audience is in their journey is incredibly important, as illustrated in the photography tutorial example. There's a fine line between overwhelm and boredom.

If your content is entertaining, what emotions do you want the viewer to come away with after watching your video?

But how do you know if you're video resonated with the right audience? Among many factors, the comments section of your video is the biggest sign. If you struck a chord with someone, you'll know it.
